« The Fate of the Phoenix! »: Teleported aboard the Shi’ar flagship, the X-Men are ordered by Lilandra to surrender Phoenix for destruction. Professor X instead challenges her to a duel of honor: the X-Men against the Imperial Guard. After a night bracing for the fight, the team is overwhelmed one by one on the lunar battlefield, until only Cyclops and Phoenix remain — and her psychic restraints fail, unleashing Dark Phoenix to strike down the Guard. Unable to stop her before she grows too powerful, the team watches her flee with Cyclops in pursuit. Wracked with guilt over the destruction she has caused and fearing she will lose control again, Phoenix makes a final, irreversible choice to end the threat herself.
