After a huge gale nearly blows him off a flagship, Carter wakes in a land of headless human slaves ruled by an elite class. He meets a headless creature that has been given a head and a great white ape, who is Tal Tarag fighting to regain his human body. A rescue of Dejah Thoris and Tars Tarkas follows, then a talking, walking head that threatens Barsoom. Script, pencils and inks by Bill Mantlo and Ernie Chan.
