« The Annihilation Gambit »: The invisible barrier around the Baxter Building is the work of Annihilus, who has escaped the Negative Zone and trapped the Fantastic Four therein. Having lost the Cosmic Control Rod that sustained his immortality, he has decided that if he must die, so must all living things, and has generated a null-field that threatens to merge Earth’s universe with the Negative Zone and destroy both. The Avengers fail to breach the field, and the Vision is instantly deactivated when he steps through it. Starfox recognizes the scheme, and Captain Marvel merges with a beam from the Starcore satellite, becoming a gamma-ray laser that neutralizes the null-field. Inside, the Avengers find the returned Fantastic Four.
