« Beyond a Shadow … »: The Beast is visiting Wonder Man on a movie shoot in Italy when a mysterious city materializes in the Mediterranean Sea. There they witness the Shadow Lord capture publicity agent Rachel Palmer. He tells her how his ancient people abused their powers over nature trying to stop an immortal agent of destruction called the Berserker, killing thousands, then dispersed, leaving him to await the Berserker’s return. Mistaken for enemies, the Avengers attack, and when they destroy the city that holds his power, the Shadow Lord perishes. With his last breath, he entrusts them with stopping the Berserker, unaware that his undying foe has already arisen.
