Uncanny X-Men #298

« …For the Children! »: Bishop wants to resign, feeling he’s failed as an X-Man, but Professor X refuses. Watching over a young latent mutant at an elementary school, Sharon Friedlander is killed by the Acolyte Cargill as they move to abduct the child; her dying telepathic call sends the X-Men racing to intercept bus driver Tom Corsi, who narrowly saves his young passengers from the Acolytes’ attack, shooting Eric Kleinstock as he tries to kill them. The X-Men battle the Acolytes, who grab their target, Teddy Matson, but Unuscione, disgusted to find he has Down’s Syndrome, returns him — and the Kleinstock brothers set the bus on fire regardless. The X-Men rescue the children as the Acolytes escape, and Senator Kelly publicly calls the attack proof of the « mutant menace. »
